Thurrock Council’s offices have been given a contemporary feel with the installation of over 3000m2 of bespoke loop pile carpet tiles manufactured in special colours by Tessera. The manufacturer worked closely with Stuart Taylor of Bailey & Taylor of Rochford, Essex, an OGC contractor, to fulfil the local authority’s requirements.
The three-storey premises date back to the early 1980s and required substantial refurbishment. An environmental survey had highlighted that the floorcoverings needed particular attention.
Facilities Manager, Jan Hughes, decided that a combination of different tiles would be visually appealing so Tessera created over 3000m2 of bespoke plain and patterned tiles specifically for the project, in a mix of colourways. The Elected Members office areas have little natural light and tiles in a neutral beige colour with blue fleck have been used to lighten the rooms and give the impression of increased space. In contrast, the main offices have high traffic usage and for practical reasons darker blue tiles were specified, with a multi-height loop pile design providing texture and visual interest.
Jan said: “Carpets had been in place since the building was constructed almost 20 years ago, but we decided to switch to tiles, mainly for ease of installation, cleaning and replacement. Being a local government body, we followed a tender process. A number of possible options were presented to us and the competitive prices and superior quality of the Tessera product won the tender”.
“The installation of the new carpet tiles has made a real difference and are such a dramatic improvement on the old carpet. Everyone is very impressed with the new look and the design created by the mix of plain and patterned tiles. Even the Mayor has commented how pleased he is with the transformation”.
