Caledonian University mixes it up
Creating an inspiring learning environment that is capable of coping with thousands of students can be a challenge.
However, Glasgow’s Caledonian University found the right answer. Its new Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Centre – a three-floor building providing state-of-the-art seminar presentation rooms which can hold up to 400 people, with a 200 seat learning café on the ground floor – used Tessera carpet tiles from Bonar Floors to create a vibrant and stimulating, yet durable, environment. Glasgow’s Caledonian University is Scotland’s fourth largest university and attracts over 15,000 students from over 90 countries around the world.
Catering for so many students means the university’s interiors have to withstand severe wear and tear from constant footfall, wheeled traffic, litter and spillages. Creating an aesthetically pleasing environment is a priority and flooring in particular can quickly look tired and out of date if the correct solution is not specified.
Mix Carpet tiles, part of the Tessera carpet tile portfolio, in Lazuli and Grit colourways were installed in the CPD Centre’s interactive seminar rooms and passageways. Mix offers an unusual and attractive alternative to block colour floor coverings. The random lay, batchless carpet tile, is designed so that shapes and shades merge together to create a visually stimulating design which disguises tile edges and creates the illusion of a seamless floor covering.
Commenting on the installation, Douglas Little from Caledonian University, says: “The CPD Centre was built to offer staff, students and external corporate bodies a welcoming and relaxed environment for continuing professional development, complete with functional seminar rooms incorporating the latest interactive technology. With so many people using the new facilities, we wanted to create a distinctive interior and saw the potential of using the flooring to achieve something different. Bonar Floors offered us the ideal solution with its Mix carpet tiles which inject interest into selected areas.”
Mix is manufactured using hardwearing, lightfast Antron yarns from Invista. Jeanette McCormack from Bonar Floors explains:” Not only does Mix deliver on aesthetics, but it is an affordable choice which is long lasting and extremely well suited to the high volume traffic areas of a university.”
With a choice of twelve contemporary colourways and a versatile design that complements large, open-plan and less spacious areas alike, Mix creates floorspaces that are truly individual.
